Rangpur

Rangpur is one of the major citiesin Bangladesh and Rangpur Division too. Rangpurdistrict headquarters was established on 16 December 1769, and the municipality established in 1869 which is one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh. The municipal office building was built in 1892 under the Chairman of the municipalityRaja JanakiBallav Sen. Rangpur division is located in the north western part of Bangladesh.Rangpur was the headquarters of Greater Rangpur district which is now broken and created Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts. The people of the region used to see flooding before the making of the Teesta Barrage. There is a large military cantonment in the town. The population of Rangpur is 2534365 and Islam is the predominant religion in Rangpur. Hinduism is the second largest religion in Rangpur with the ratio of Muslim 89.60%,Hindu 9.59%, and Christian 0.50% and others 0.31%. In an anthropological view most people of Rangpur are having Rajbangshi blood. Rangpurdivision is covering an area of around 16,184.99 square kilometres. Rangpur declared as a division in 2010 accommodating about 6 million populations.

History

Rangpur was conquered by the army ofcommander Raja Man Singh, a commander of the Mughal emperor, Akbar, in 1575, and it was fully integrated in 1686 into the Mughal Empire. Place names such as Mughalbasa and Mughalhat bear testimony to the Mughal association and past of Rangpur. Later on, Rangpur passed under the control of “Sarker” of Ghoraghat. Some of the notable educational institute of RangpurareRangpur Medical College, Rangpur Army Medical College, Rangpur Dental College, Rangpur Polytechnic Institute, Rangpur Technical School and College, Begum Rokeya College, Carmichael College, Colectorate School and College, Rangpur Government College, Cantonment Public School And College, Rangpur, BirUttamShaheedSamad High School, Cantonment Public School And College, Rangpur, RangpurZilla School. There are around 282 high schools, 722 government primary schools, 38 junior high schools, 193 NGOs operated schools and almost 370 Madrasahs in Rangpur.

The Tajhat is a former “rajbari” or zamindar’s palace lies just at the south of the city of Rangpur. After the end of the British Raj, the building was abandoned although it was used as a courthouse for a few years during the 80s. In 2004, it was largely restored and turned into a museum with ancient inscriptions and art. A museum and women’s training center was established in Pairabondh, the birthplace of Begum Rokeya. There is another museum at the heart of the town. Rangpur city is known as Green town for its beautiful garden and Green Park throughout the town.There is a big Zoo at the main part of the city and an ancient auditorium named ‘Town Hall’ at the heart of the city, where different cultural programs are held. The economy of the Rangpur division is weak since there is no major natural resource and industry. In the rural areas, there are hardly some sources of income for landless poor people. In the division no economic places took place until the 1990’s for the regular flooding before making the Teesta Barrage. There is a beautiful place named CHicliVata near the stadium. The place is surrounded by many lakes and rice fields. JADU NIBASH – Radhaballav is an ancient house belonging to the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Rangpur

RangpurCity Corporation is one of the newest formed city corporations of Bangladesh. It is also used as the administrative building of the Rangpur Division. Rangpur showed sustainable development and economic growth working with the urban and rural population. Rangpur division and City Corporation has sat a goal to upgrade the urban area and increase urban population.urban strategies according to the city condition for which it is prepared;

  • Identify the sectoral agencies and their projects that are likely to influence the development of the city;
  • Identify the probable fields where public and private partnership projects will bring highest benefit and development to the citizens;
  • Adopt suitable standards for all urban amenities to provide at affordable price;
  • Provide framework for Detailed Area Plan/Action Plan;
  • pointing the basis of coordination between government agencies in the appliance of various schemes for the physical development which will directly or indirectly influence the development of the city;
  • Formulate in details various policies to give proper guideline for the development and taking control of the city.
  • Also provide the right policy frame work for better cooperation amongthe agencies of the government to foster inclusive city governance.
  • Bring the urban development issues with its problems and opportunities before the government for support and implementation.
