Sirajganj

Sirajganj district is under the Rajshahi division in an area of 2497.92 sq km, located in between 24°01′ and 24°47′ north latitudes and in between 89°15′ and 89°59′ east longitudes. Sirajganj is surrounded by the bogra district on the north, pabna and manikganj  on the south, tangail and jamalpur on the east, Pabna, natore and Bogra on the west.total, population of the district is 2693814. Main rivers are jamuna, ichamati, baral, hurasagar. There are 9 sun divisions of the district Sirajganj Sadar Upazila, Kazipur Upazila, Ullahpara Upazila, Shahjadpur Upazila, Raiganj Upazila, Kamarkhanda Upazila, Tarash Upazila, Belkuchi Upazila, Chauhali Upazila, (Solonga Upazila). Sirajganj was a sub district under the pabna district and turned into a district in 1984. Among 9 upazilas ullahpara is the largest (414.43 sq km) and kamarkhanda’ is the smallest (91.61 sq km) upazila of sirajganj.

History

In 1762, a massive earthquake changed the flow of the Jamuna river and created a new river named Baral and some new land emerged. Most of the lands belonged to the Zamindar siraj ali chowdhury. This area fradually started to be known by his name and the naming of the area happened from him. The area is best known for the hand loom cottage industries. During the war of liberation Palashdanga juba shibir was formed at kalibari of Bhadraghat union under Kamarkhanda upazila. On 20 April an encounter was held between the pak army and freedom fighters of Bangladesh. On 23 April the pak army conducted heavy killing violation with women and firing at ullapar. After 2 days the pak army shot many people dead in the upazila. In a battle on 11 November 130 pak soldiers including some razakars were killed. Sirajganj experienced heavy killing and violation during the war of liberation. There are Mass graves 2 at Baroitala of Kazipur upazila and Asbaria of Tarash upazila.

Average literacy rate of the district is 40.6%. there are many educational institutions in sirajganj and some popular of them are North Bengal Medical College, Enayetpur Medical College and Hospital, Islamia College (1887), B.L.Govt. High School(estd.1869), Shaleha Ishaque Girls School, Chowbari Islamia High School(estd.1913),Govt. Akbar Ali College(estd.1970)[3] , Ullapara Science College and Salanga Degree College. Fuljore Degree College,Sonatani High School (1905),’ Salop High School (1905), Ullahpata Merchants Pilot Multilateral High School (1906), Shyam Kishore Pilot High School (1913) etc. Students of Sirajganj are very enthusiastic about study and they take part in various extra- curricular activities like the Math and Science Olympiads, Spelling Bee etc.

Main source of income of the district is Agriculture. Other sources are including industry 11.05%, commerce 14.47%, transport and communication 3.02%, service 6.33% etc. main crops grown in sirajganj are Paddy, Jute, Sugarcane, Onion, Garlic, Potato, Yam, Peanuts, Chilly, Mastered etc.

Tourist places of the district are Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, Rabindra Kacharibari, Khaja Younous Ali Medical College, Milk vita Plant, Eco park, Graveyard of Hazrat Enayatpuri (R), Graveyard of Shah Sharif Jindapir  (R), Joy Sagor, Noboratna Temple  etc.
